So as you know, I stopped writing lengthy reviews on this site this year, keeping the blog as more of a film diary of sorts.  Lo and behold,...

The 2012 RyMickey Awards - Worst Performance of the Year

This dubious honor can be bestowed on any male or female who made their particular film a chore to watch.  Unlike previous years where I've thrown in what some may have considered some surprises, this year I was a little bit more straightforward in my thinking.

Worst Performance of 2012

(Dis)Honorable Mentions

Molly Price - Not Fade Away
Ashley Greene and Sebastian Stan - The Apparition

#5 - Charlyne Yi - This Is 40
Oh, Charlyne Yi.  You were absolutely horrendous in 2009's Paper Heart, winning the first iteration of this RyMickey Award (see 2009 link below) and your acting skills haven't gotten any better.  Funny voices don't automatically equal humor and every scene you're in feels forced and pitiful.

#4 - Josh Peck and Isabel Lucas - Red Dawn
Between Ms. Lucas attempting to hide her Aussie accent (or at least I think she was trying to hide it...it is always slightly prevalent, but never prevalent enough to determine what nationality her character is) and Mr. Peck whining while at the same time trying to be as masculine as possible (not a solid combination), the duo helped make Red Dawn one of the worst movies of the year.

#3 - Robert Pattinson - Bel Ami
All these years of Twilight films and Pattinson managed to stay off the Worst Performance of the Year lists (the same couldn't be said for his co-stars from that series), but Pattinson joins the gang this year.  I just don't get the sexual appeal of this guy, but even putting that aside, when asked to convey anything on the emotional front other than "vacant," he fails miserably.

#2 - Quentin Tarantino - Django Unchained
Why, Quentin?  Why put yourself in this movie?  We made it through over two hours and then you throw in a personalized cameo in which you play some Australian guy with one of the worst accents captured on film.  With this tiny role, you succeed in taking us out of this world you've created and I'm certain that isn't your intention.

#1 - The entire cast of Rock of Ages
Malin Ackerman, Alec Baldwin, Mary J. Blige, Diego Boneta, Russell Brand, Bryan Cranston, Tom Cruise, Paul Giamatti, Julianne Hough, and Catherine Zeta-Jones
One of the worst movies of the year features a cast that can't really sing (and in a musical that's a significant setback) and some who can't really act (I'm looking at you, Mary J. Blige).  While leads Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta fare a little bit better, the rest of the ensemble overacts to the nth degree and makes the whole film painful.

  1. I take this opportunity to reiterate my (I think) previous assertion that the worst part of Rock of Ages was the two leads. A year removed and this impression is much stronger than it should be in my mind.

  2. Aww...see I thought Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta fared the best. Granted, they were given HORRIBLE lines to spout, they couldn't sing that good, and, as characters, they were as cookie cutter as could be, but I felt like they were better than anyone else in the cast. (Faint praise, I'm aware.)
