So as you know, I stopped writing lengthy reviews on this site this year, keeping the blog as more of a film diary of sorts.  Lo and behold,...

Movie Review - The Next Three Days

The Next Three Days (2010)
Starring Russell Crowe, Elizabeth Banks, and Liam Neeson
Directed by Paul Haggis

A wife and mother is accused and convicted of murder.  A husband and father believes in his wife's innocence.  When judicial appeals fail, he takes matters into his own hands and plots an escape plan for his jailed wife.

The blandness of those three sentences above sums up my feelings towards the dull The Next Three Days, a movie that has a plot that should have elicited some modicum of excitement, but instead never achieves any bit of tension.  Instead, director and co-screenwriter Paul Haggis presents a rather heavy-handed drama featuring a one-note performance from Russell Crowe as the beleaguered husband.  Crowe, however, comes off much better than Elizabeth Banks, typically known for her comedic roles, who is featured here in an unexpected dramatic turn.  Banks is never once believable as a convicted felon and she isn't very convincing as a mother either.

Considering that the film skips over the entire trial of Banks' character, one would think that the film would move rather quickly, but instead it's hampered with some silly subplots (including a silly unnecessary cameo by Liam Neeson as a convict who escaped multiple times from jail) and the story itself just fails miserably.  Unfortunately, there's really nothing to recommend here and it's certainly not worth even a rental.

The RyMickey Rating:  D
